Sleepover Guide for Doggy Day Out (DDO)
WHAT IS A SLEEPOVER?
Sleepovers allow you to keep one of our Doggy Day Out dogs overnight! You’ll pick the
dog up from the shelter at 4 PM and drop them off the next morning between 10-11
AM. Sleepovers are a great way to give shelter dogs a longer break from their kennels,
and a good nights’ sleep!
HOW DO I BOOK A SLEEPOVER?
• The first step is to sign up as a DDO volunteer! For information, click here.
• There is a separate option for sleepovers on the scheduling software
• You may book an outing and sleepover, and keep the same dog throughout
o Make sure you remind the pickup person to include the sleepover bag!
IF YOU DECIDE TO DO A SLEEPOVER DURING YOUR OUTING.
• Call the shelter to let us know – no later than 3 PM
• Come back during normal drop off time to get supplies
PLEASE BE PATIENT – EVERYTHING IS NEW FOR YOUR GUEST
We often don’t know if dogs have ever lived in a home before.
Keep things simple: don’t overload them with lots of guests.
Let us know if any new behaviors pop up at home.
MAKE A PLAN FOR SLEEPING
• In your room with a gate across the door, or closed in another secure room?
o Have a plan B in mind. HSSV can lend you supplies – just ask
MANAGEMENT TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SLEEPOVER
• Supervise your guest at all times
• Keep human food and household valuables out of their reach
• Leave their leash dragging for easy redirection
• Have a way to safely contain them if needed (crate, bathroom)
• Take them outside to use the bathroom often
DOGS RETURN DURING ADOPTIONS OPEN HOURS
• Pickup is at 4 PM, and drop-off begins at 10 AM
• Please be sure to return the sleepover and DDO supplies
• If you decide to foster long-term, you must still return the dog at 10 AM
