Thank you for considering Human Society Silicon Valley's Garden Cat Program.
In order to make your adoption a success, we ask that you prepare the following requirements before reaching out for an appointment.
Step 1: Housing Requirement
All of our garden cats require a transitional space. This includes a space that is a minimum of 12sq ft. The space must be predator proof and have a window for the animal to look out of to see the outside. Good transitional spaces include chicken coops, garages and ventilated sheds. Your garden cat will need a minimum of 3-4 weeks to acclimate to this new space.
The space requires:
- A litter box
- Food and water bowls
- A perching area
- A hiding spot
- A place to lay down
Please be aware that food and water bowls must be a minimum of 2 feet away from the litterbox.
*If you are planning to adopt more than one garden cat, please be prepared to increase the dimensions by the number of cats you are planning to adopt. The dimensions above are the minimum requirement for one cat. Please also be prepared to provide a litter box, food bowl, perching area, hiding spot, and place to lay down for each cat.
Step 2: Reaching Out
Once you have completed your space for your garden cat, please reach out to the adoptions department. You can then let us know how many cats you are looking to adopt as well as send us photos of your space. Staff will evaluate the photos to confirm the set up meet's all of the requirements. Once approved, the staff will work with you to create an appointment for you to Humane Society Silicon Valley to pick up your garden cat(s).
While waiting for your appointment we highly recommend reading the
Garden Cat Adoption Guide f
or more information before you come in for your adoption.
Step 3: Picking Up Your Garden Cat
Before coming to Humane Society Silicon Valley for your appointment, please make sure your space is fully prepared. You will be required to bring a cat carrier to pick up and transport your garden cat to your home. Please remember the adoption fee for our garden cats is $10. This can be paid by cash or card.
Step 4: Releasing Your Garden Cat
Once the acclimation period (3-4 weeks) is up, it’s recommended to keep the housing unit set up permanently, or switch over to another type of shelter in the same location.
Purchasing or constructing a special cat house, like the Feral Villa™, is highly recommended. It is designed specifically for protection from predators, and only takes up a small space on
your property.
