Pocket Pet Steps and Requirements

Thank you for considering Human Society Silicon Valley's Pocket Pets.

In order to make your adoption a success, we ask that you prepare the following requirements before reaching out for an appointment.

Step 1: Housing Requirement
All of our pocket pet's require a habitat setup prior to adoption. The habitat  should be a minimum of 7.5 square feet for guinea pigs and 2 square feet for hamsters.

Recommendations for housing can be found below:

The habitat requires:
  1. Bedding
  2. Food bowl 
  3. Water bottle or ceramic bowl for water
  4. A hiding spot
  5. Enrichment toys
  6. Enough space to move around

*Hamsters can only be adopted out as singles, guinea pigs can be adopted in pairs.

Step 2: Reaching Out
Once you have completed your habitat for your pocket pet, please reach out to the adoptions department through the link in the animal's profile. You can then send us photos of your space. Staff will evaluate the photos to confirm the set up meet's all of the requirements. Once approved, the staff will work with you to create an appointment for you to come to Humane Society Silicon Valley to pick up your pocket pet.

Step 3: Picking Up Your Pocket Pet
Before coming to Humane Society Silicon Valley for your appointment, please make sure your space is fully prepared. You will be required to bring a pet carrier to pick up and transport pocket pet to your home. Please remember the adoption fee for guinea pigs is $30 and hamsters is $20. This can be paid by cash or card.
